Celebrating Winter Holidays!

Dear Parents,

We had a very busy week preparing for our winter holidays.  The children worked together to create a beautiful Christmas tree, which adorns our classroom bulletin board. They also each made
3-D Christmas trees which they decorated by painting them green and adding colorful dots and holiday stickers.

We had a wonderful visit with Felix's grandmother, Linda.  She read a Christmas story to the children.  Linda  was a preschool director for 25 years. She loves to come  to school and read and do art projects with the children.  The Whole Note Class joined our class while we decorated wreaths with tissue paper, pom poms and bows. They came out great and are hanging in our classroom.

We also had Dr. Van visit with us this week.  He is a Pediatric dentist. He brought in his dinosaur, who we named Sophia, which he used to demonstrate the proper way to brush and floss our teeth. He also talked about nutrition and how important it is to eat healthy to have nice teeth.  Before he left he gave all the children and teachers a dental goody bag.

The children  had so much fun learning how to play the dreidel game. You begin by placing either candy, coins or nuts in the center of the table (we chose to use Hershey kisses). Then each player takes a turn spinning the dreidel and taking the action determined by the letter you spin:
Nun: The player takes nothing.
Gimel: The player takes all.
Hey: The player takes half.
Shin: The player puts one in.

The children really enjoyed playing the game.  However, they did have a difficult time waiting to finish the game before eating the Hershey kisses.  They might have eaten a few pieces while playing the game , and brought the rest home.  The funny thing about this activity is that we chose to do it on the same day as the dentist's visit.  However, he did say it is okay to eat candy once in a while, as long as you brush your teeth afterwords.

We ended the week by making delicious Potato Latkes, a traditional food eaten on Hanukkah. The children loved eating the potato latkes.  Some of the children dipped them into sour cream and others into applesauce. Mmmm, were they good!  The entire school smelled like latkes as well as everyone's clothes.

We look forward to our Holiday celebration on Thursday at 11:30 am. The children will all sing together and then go into their individual classrooms to celebrate.  You will have a chance to try the Latkes at our party and some other delicious foods made by the teachers.

Love,

Ms. Bonne and Ms. Barbara
